Abstract
For environmental education, photography can be a resource for use in activities in basic education, with the use of real images, of aspects related to the human being. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the use of photography in basic education as a teaching instrument, applying assumptions of critical environmental education, having as the research question "What are the potentialities of using photography in basic education as a teaching instrument, applying assumptions of education critical environment?". It was analyzed how photography appears in the normative document of Brazilian education, the BNCC (2017). Then, we investigate how photography is approached in five editions of ENPEC (2011 to 2019) and in theses and dissertations from the Bank of Theses and Dissertations in Environmental Education (BT&D/EA) in the period from 1981 to 2016. During the period of suspension of face-to-face classes, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we held a workshop remotely, for students in the ninth grade of elementary school with the use of images captured by the cell phone. As a theoretical reference we consider Critical Environmental Education and Artistic Research Methodology in Education Based on Photography. The results showed that in the BNCC photography is present in the three levels of basic education, being cited in early childhood education, elementary school and high school, although it has a greater presence in elementary school. Its presence was more frequent in the area of languages, especially in the Portuguese language curriculum component. The analysis of the ENPEC proceedings revealed that the five editions of the event brought works that approached photography. Science teaching and teacher training were the most recurrent themes in the analysis. The works analyzed in BT&D/EA showed that the authors consider photography not as an artistic instrument in their research, but as traditionally qualitative. In our experience report, the difficulties and limitations that emerged during the process of conducting a photographic activity remotely became evident, which directly impacted the participants' adherence. Issues such as autonomy to seek other sources of information in addition to the available platform and the search for printed handouts distributed by the school to reach students with difficult access show an attempt to circumvent the adversities that materialized. Topics emerged such as human relationships that were intensified at that moment built within the family; discouragement and limited leisure options, which still compete with school activities. Most of the teachers participating in the research reported making use of photography, mainly from websites, textbooks and of their own authorship. However, there was a predominance of the extrinsic type of use. The research allowed us to find another way of looking at and reviewing our own scientific production, through the artistic methodology of research in education based on photography
