Objetivo: Investigar as condições
Resultado: A prevalência inicial e
Introduction: Leishmania chagasi infection is the most common clinical presentation for visceral leishmaniaisis in endemic
areas. The municipality of Raposa, Maranhão is an endemic area in the state of Maranhão- Brazil and has recorded cases of the
disease. Objective: To investigate the social and epidemiologic conditions and the occurrence of Leishmania (Leishmania)
infantum chagasi infection in endemic areas of the Municipality of Raposa, state of Maranhão, Brazil, during 2006 to 2008.
Methods: Descriptive prospective and longitudinal study with all individuals without history of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The
study was performed in three stages – a) population census, b) application of questionnaire, physical examination and detection
of infection by intradermal reaction of Montenegro (IDRM) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests; c) physical
examination and detection of infection by ELISA. Result: The initial and final prevalence and the incidence of L. (L.) chagasi infection
by ELISA were 19.8%, 16.6% and 8.4% respectively. The percentage of positivity by IDRM was 82.0%. Conclusion: The high
infection rate by L. (L.) chagasi observed in the study places suggests presence of asymptomatic forms in all ages. Control measures
should be adopted to reduce the occurrence of the disease in the study area.
