The word "tea" is popularly used in Brazil as a synonym for infusion of fruits, leaves, stems and/or roots of any plants, although they are considered in natural health food and therefore exempt from registration, "teas" are often used for relief cramping and discomfort caused by intestinal gas in infants as has been evidenced in research in the country. The Codex Alimentarius defines children and elderly groups at risk for the presence of foreign matter in food. Although it is impossible to produce food completely free of contamination, this can be reduced with the use of Good Manufacturing Practices and Storage. Microscopic analysis provides an important tool for evaluating conditions and improper practices during all phases of production, storage and distribution of food. The present study aimed to evaluate the quality, by researching harmful foreign matter or not to human health, in ten brands of "teas" of plant species Pimpinella anisum L. offered in the retail market of Rio de Janeiro. The methodologies for food from Association of Official Analytical Chemists – 2010, and to herbal drugs from Brazilian Pharmacopoeia – 2010 were used and it was assessed the information on the labels, based on the existing laws for "tea" as food. Within the eleven brands, six showed the presence of foreign matter above 2%. In all samples, was detected the presence of soil and sand, hard objects that are considered harmful to health and is at odds with the specific laws.
