Kaposi sarcoma is the most diagnosed neoplasia in AIDS patients and detection
of
human herpes virus 8 latent nuclear antigen (HHV8
-
LNA

1) has been shown to
be an
useful histological diagnostic test. The goal of this study is to investigate the
expression of HHV8 antigen in Kaposi sarcoma and its histological simulators on skin
biopsies from HIV positive patients followed in the Instituto de Pesquisa Clínica
E
vandro Chagas (IPEC) between 2003 and 2010. Immunohistochemistry protocol for
the antigen was applied in 49 cases of cutaneous KS and in 60 cases of occasional
histological simulators of this lesion (12 dermatofibromas, 17 hemangiomas, 8
pyogenic granuloma
s and 23 stasis dermatitis). Clinical and epidemiological data
were obtained from clinical files. The diagnosis of KS was confirmed by two
pathologists. Expression to HHV8
-
LNA

1 was detected in all cases of KS despite its
clinical stage and no positivity w
as observed in the remainder cases. Our results
confirm the diagnostic value of HHV8 latent nuclear antigen to distinguish KS from its
simulators and consolidate its use in IPEC’s pathology laboratory daily practice
