O objeto de estudo da presente monoia foi determinar a importância do farmacêutico na orientação quanto ao uso racional e adequado de um fitoterápico no momento de sua dispensação nas farmácias do Município de Volta Redonda, Estado Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Usando o método de entrevista estruturada, informações relevantes foram coletadas de dois grupos diferentes de pessoas: cinquenta farmacêuticos e cinquenta usuários de fitoterápicos, os quais foram submetidos a dois tipos de questionários respectivamente, compostos por quatorze questões cada um, as quais foram analisadas de acordo com os objetivos propostos para esta pesquisa. Os resultados indicaram que 94% dos farmacêuticos trabalham em farmácias alopáticas, sendo que 92% deles adquiriram conhecimento sobre fitoterápicos principalmente na faculdade. 66% dos farmacêuticos têm como prática comum prescrever fitoterápicos baseados nos sintomas do paciente. A maioria dos usuários de fitoterápicos se encontra na categoria adulto (86%), sendo que 38% destes usam fitoterápicos há menos de 5 anos. A quase totalidade dos usuários respondeu conhecer o uso dos fitoterápicos pela tradição popular, porém 68% desconhecem suas corretas indicações e efeitos adversos. Considerando todos os dados obtidos, concluimos que a comunidade de Volta Redonda necessita urgentemente de campanhas informativas sobre o risco e as consequências do uso de medicamentos fitoterápicos sem a orientação adequada de um profissional da saúde .
