Resumen en portugues
A recente infecção de 25 pessoas pelo Trypanosoma cruzi, em Santa Catarina, com três mortes, chamou a atenção de todo o país para a doença de Chagas. O surto representou mais uma comprovação de que a doença, que atinge cerca de 3 milhões de brasileiros, pode ser transmitida por via oral, já que todos os pacientes infectaram-se ao ingerir caldo de cana contaminado. A doença pode ser prevenida principalmente pelo controle do inseto transmissor, o barbeiro, e pela seleção de doadores em bancos de sangue. Embora possa ser curada, em geral no início, a doença de Chagas ainda é endêmica em muitas áreas do interior do país, exigindo pesquisas sobre novas drogas contra o T. cruzi e novas formas de combater o barbeiro.
