This study aims to discuss the importance of the concept of human dignity for the ethical training of physicians. A narrative bibliographic review methodology is used. This is an interdisciplinary study that relates concepts of education, philosophy, law and health, and is organized into three thematic axes, namely: the axis that deals with the concept of ethics and morals, of man as a subject worthy of protection and the three levels of medical judgment (DIAS, 2016; RICOEUR, 2008); the axis that addresses the concept of human dignity, in which the characteristics of the subject of law, the meaning of the human being and the concept of human dignity are discussed (HABERMAS, 2012; RICOEUR, 2008; SUPIOT, 2007); and the axis that turns to the concept of education (PERRENOUD, 1999; REGO, 2003; TEIXEIRA, 2007). It is accepted that the teaching of human rights enables physicians to act ethically and humanely, in addition to being committed to defending the fundamental human dignity of individuals, their patients. It is argued, therefore, that the teaching of human rights, in medical training, should develop attitudes and values, seeking a practice oriented towards citizenship in caring for the other as a legitimate equal.
