Abstract
This research aims to analyze the constitution of the National Library collection, held in the Manuscripts Section, at the National Library Foundation, throughout the period from 1911 to 1996. The research sought to identify the displacements of the collection through the historical and administrative perspectives, which alternated along its trajectory, analyzing the results of this displacement for its composition. Within this time frame, it was decided to analyze three moments of administrative reforms in the institution, the reforms of the management of Manoel Cícero Peregrino da Silva, in 1911, management of Rodolfo Garcia in 1944 and Rubens Borba de Morais, in 1946, and the management by Jannice Monte-mor, in 1975. In a more detailed way, it presents the three administrative units that were the places of custody of the archive: the Secretariat (1876-1944), the Documentation Section (1960-1975) and the Manuscripts (1876-1996). The National Library collection was originally conceived as the institution's permanent archive, guarded in the Manuscripts Section, where it remained until the 1960s, when it was transferred to the Documentation Section, from an administrative perspective of the archive. In the 1970s, the archive regained its historical dimension, having been relocated to the Manuscripts Section, where it remains to this day.
