Abstract
This study aims at analysing the trajectory of the doctor and botanical brazilian Francisco Freire-Allemão de Cysneiros (1797-1874), one of the exponents of brazilian science at nineteen century. He graduated in surgery at the Academia Médico-Cirúrgica do Rio de Janeiro and doctorated in medicine in the University of Paris, defending one thesis on the use of iodine against the "papeira", currently considered as two illnesses caused for the hypotireodism. He transited for the main created scientific societies in the country since 1829, establishing in 1850 the brief one, but productive Sociedade Velosiana de Natural Ciências. He also was professor of medical botany and principles of zoology in institutions of superior education as the Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro and the Escola Central Militar. Besides, he commanded the regional works of the Commission of Scientific Exploration of the North Provinces, pioneering expedition idealized and promoted by brazilians, on which we can detached what it characterizes the question of the brazilian nationality, when taming the natural wealth, customs and the certainties politics of a region little known by the remain of the country. As botanical, he prioritized the studies of the noble wood that could be used in the naval construction, classified species and created new botanical gender for specimenes of the brazilian flora. The scientist searched recognition together scholars of natural history in Brazil and botanical europeans as Carl Friedrich von Martius, Michele Tenore, Achilles Richard, Friedrich Ernst Ludwig von Fischer, among others. To reconstruct his performance in the brazilian scientific scenario, we take as sources the documents of the Freire-Allemão Collection, the biographies and also autobiografical notes biographies from the botanical, together with reference books of history of sciences and especially, of the botany.
