This thesis aims to analyze the trajectory of carnauba wax extractivism (Copernicia cerifera Mart.) in northeastern Brazil between 1900 and 1970, taking as an approach the scientific and political aspects that shaped the discussions about the extraction and processing of wax and the cultivation, domestication, and exploration of the plant for industrial purposes, and the discourses that guided the international circulation of this commodity between production sites and consumption sites. This work has as central object the carnauba wax; so, the purpose of this work is to understand, from a historical perspective, the path taken by explorers who, over time, scrutinized this Brazilian natural resource. In this sense, both initiatives by government agencies, agronomists and national producers will be addressed, as well as foreign ventures, in particular the efforts of the North American company S.C.Johnson & Son, which will carry out a set of actions for the scientific exploration of carnauba wax in full habitat of the plant. In general, these actions advocate the introduction of technical-scientific methodologies to replace the centuries-old procedures used to obtain carnauba wax, as an effective means of protecting the plant and maintaining the Brazilian monopoly of product distribution. As support of my proposal, I analyze government report, legislation, statistical documents, bulletins, official publications by agronomists from the Ministério da Agricultura, minutes, newspapers, periodicals, scientific magazines, manuals and advertising leaflets, reports by naturalist, and others.
