Objective: In the past years, periodontal disease (PD) has been linked to many
medical conditions. We hypothesized that there could be an association between PD
and gestational hypertension (GH) similarly as seen with preeclampsia. Methods: A
case-control study in 2 hospitals from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, enrolled 120 eligible
women in their first 96 hours postpartum. Case group was composed by 40 patients
with GH and control by 80 patients that had normotensive pregnancies. Periodontal
examination was performed on all subjects according to the American Academy of
Periodontology disease definitions. Hypothesis tests were used to compare nominal
and numerical variables. Results: There was a significant difference in the median
value for periodontal probing depth between groups (0.53mm for cases versus
0.21mm for controls, p=0.024). Conclusion: As seen in preeclampsia studies, our
work has shown significant statistical difference in a periodontal measurement
between hypertensive and non-hypertensive postpartum women.
