Destes, 5.176
(31,5%) tem registro de internação em UTI e 3.348 (64,7%) evoluíram a óbito. 1.993 (59,5%)
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, a respiratory infection caused by the SARS-COV-2
coronavirus, has produced significant numbers of infected people and deaths worldwide. The
objective of this study was to describe the epidemiological profile of cases and deaths due to
COVID-19 of patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in the state of Goiás notified in
the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System, from March to November
2020. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study of all cases and deaths by COVID 19 of
patients admitted to 145 intensive care units, from public and private hospitals in Goiás, was
reported in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (SIVEP Gripe), in
the period between March 1, 2020 and November 4, 2020 *. To characterize the
sociodemographic profile of cases admitted to the ICU, the variables were analyzed: age, sex,
race / color, education. For the description of clinical characteristics, variables were used: signs
and symptoms, presence of comorbidities, use of ventilatory support and length of hospital stay.
In the analysis of lethality by COVID-19, it was considered by type of public or private
hospitalization unit. Results: Of 258,311 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 16,444 (6.4%) had
symptoms of SARS and required hospitalization. Of these, 5,176 (31.5%) had a record of ICU
admission and 3,348 (64.7%) died. 1,993 (59.5%) were male, 2,500 (74.6%) were over 60 years
of age, 1,564 (48.7%) were of brown skin color and 732 (69.1%) were educated until school
fundamental. 2,057 (69.3%) had comorbidities, 2,932 (96.1%) needed ventilatory support.
Regarding the length of hospital stay until death from 8 to 15 days was the most frequent period,
the average length of stay was 9.6 days. In the present study, the time between the onset of
symptoms over 24 hours was not associated with the risk of death from COVID-19. Deaths in
public ICUs were more frequent than in private units, and were associated with the risk of
severe infection and death from COVID-19 than those hospitalized in a private ICU.
Conclusion: Deaths were more frequent in males, older than 60 years and with at least one risk
factor or comorbidity. Factors such as patients over the age of 60, with low schooling, with the
presence of more than one comorbidity and hospitalized in public units have an increasing risk
of mortality from COVID-19 in Goiás. Skin color and time spent searching for care from the
onset of symptoms was not related to the risk of death from COVID-19. The high lethality in
the ICU of Goiás reinforces the need for diagnosis and timely treatment, in addition to
contributing to the knowledge of populations with a higher risk of aggravation and death and
thus allowing the hospital care network to prepare for the possible necessary interventions. State
surveillance is required to carry out complementary studies to identify the factors associated
with death from COVID-19 in the ICU.
