Abstract in Portuguese
Resumo: O objetivo do trabalho é determinar o estado imunitário e os
antecedentes vacinais e a infecção natural do sarampo.
nascidas no bairro Bandim-I no período de 1976 a 1982.
Abstract
Summary: The objective of this work is to determine the immune condition
and levels of antibodies against measles in women from 14 to 25 years of age
resident in Bissau, in the period between 1997 and 1998, correlated with vaccinal
antecedents and the measles natural infection. Methodology: A transverse study of
serum prevalence of measles accomplished in a cohort study of women born in the
Bandim-I district between the years of 1976 to 1982. Information about exposure to
measles and samples of blood were collected to determine the titer of antibodies
against the disease by the test of Inhibition of Hemagglutination (HAI). Results: Of
the 2240 women born in the period of interest, 783 were found, in which 420 had the
antibody level determined. Among the tested women, 417 were analyzed. In 43
women, 10,3% of the tested serums, no antibodies were found. The verified
seropositive results were 89,7%. The vaccine against measles was received by
66,9% of the women and 31,2% referred to have had measles in their childhood. And
32,1% affirmed that had people with measles in the house of the person being
interviewed. Regarding the reproductive history, 33,3% of the women already had
childbirth and 66,7% still not. Most of the studied women were among 15 to 16 years
old. It was twice larger the chance of being protected against the disease on those
women that got sick of measles in relation to those who did not get sick, controlling
the effect of the other variables (p=0,051). A slight increase of the prevalence of
serum protection against measles was identified in women that received two vaccine
doses and a decrease in the prevalence of serum protection in women who had had
children, however without statistical confirmation.
