Abstract
Photography as an instrument to record activities has been valued at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz since its beginning, in 1900. With the advent of the digital age, we experienced an exponential increase in the number of images produced, which made the preservation of these files one of the greatest challenges of this century. This paper originates from this finding and its consequent institutional challenge, that is, native digital images need efficient management mechanisms in the required archival standards. This is a study on the management of native digital photographic documents produced by the Laboratório Fotográfico J. Pinto, within the scope of the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, and under the custody of the Departamento de Arquivo e Documentação – DAD/COC/FIOCRUZ. Its purpose is to discuss the main issues involved in the management of these documents, which support institutional memory; are holders of evidential and historical value; and, to propose – based on the review of the mapping of work processes of the Laboratório Fotográfico J. Pinto (produced in year 2011) and the analysis of the digital preservation policies of pioneering Brazilian institutions in the discussion of this theme – an updated workflow, adequate to the current reality of the institution, using good practices in dealing with these digital photographic documents since the time of their conception until its permanent preservation or disposal, in line with the guidelines developed by the institution on digital preservation
