This study comes from the intention of helping to strengthen the obvious need for
greater rigor in the inspection of food labeling in Brazil. It aimed to understand the
effectiveness of legislation on labeling of diet and light foods, which, from an initial
literature review, it has been assumed that we should find results of noncompliance
similar to those evidenced by the review related to food in general. Presented by two
articles, the study has confirmed this assumption. Data obtained by comparing the
general legislation and the specific one with the available information on the labels
revealed the presence of irregularities in all the products analyzed, revealing even more
than one nonconformity in each product. It follows, therefore, the urgency of
surveillance and educational actions to enable consumers, particularly in the case of diet
and light products, the access to reliable informations on these foods.
