Oferece informações básicas sobre os triatomíneos para pessoal técnico envolvido com o controle vetorial de doença de Chagas. Desde a sua criação, o laboratório mantém sua vocação para desenvolver pesquisas sobre epidemiologia-clínica, biologia, biossistemática, ecologia e comportamento dos triatomíneos, tendo em vista o controle vetorial da doença de Chagas. Também são investigados aspectos da relação do Trypanosoma cruzi com os triatomíneos e com diferentes hospedeiros. Esse laboratório cumpre historicamente, sua função de referência para instituições nacionais e internacionais de saúde e de pesquisa sobre a doença de Chagas, através da avaliação, assessoramento do controle vetorial da doença de Chagas e formação de recursos humanos. Da realidade epidemiológica subtrai seu objeto de pesquisa, trazendo principalmente do campo as perguntas que são analisadas e respondidas no laboratório, através das técnicas e análises mais modernas. Neste momento, e atendendo à uma solicitação da Secretaria de Vigilância em Saúde, estamos investindo na criação de um centro de monitoramento da resistência de triatomíneos aos inseticidas, na expectativa de podermos atender à demanda nacional de uma avaliação das populações de barbeiros, após 30 anos de programa de controle através do uso de inseticidas de ação residual. A partir de 2001, houve grande investimento da Vice-Presidência, e Serviços de Referência e Ambiente da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, através do seu Vice-Presidente Ary Carvalho de Miranda, para oficialização do trabalho de referência, até então desarticulado e sem uma política clara intra-institucional, e também, na sua relação com o Ministério da Saúde. Desde então, o Laboratório de Triatomíneos e Epidemiologia da Doença de Chagas foi reconhecido como referência oficial da FIOCRUZ, participando de um projeto financiado pela Secretaria de Vigilância em Saúde, com absorção de recursos humanos, programação e orçamentos anuais para suas atividades. Dessa forma, nosso laboratório teve ampliada a sua capacidade de atendimento à uma demanda exponencialmente crescente, como consequência da descentralização das atividades de controle das doenças transmitidas por vetores. Em 2006, tivemos a alegria da certificação internacional da eliminação do Triatoma infestans do território brasileiro, triatomíneo responsável por grande parte da tragédia que representou a doença de Chagas para os países que constituem o Cone Sul. Isso, entretanto, não significa a eliminação da doença. Seguem as pessoas infectadas, um intenso ciclo silvestre do parasita, e também, várias espécies autóctones de triatomíneo com grande capacidade vetorial, e ainda outras modalidades de transmissão, como se observa na Amazônia, sem que o vetor esteja domiciliado. O controle vetorial da doença de Chagas não terminou. Apesar das baixas taxas de infestação intradomiciliar e ausência da transmissão humana, a consolidação da vigilância epidemiológica é um desafio para os serviços de saúde. O Laboratório de Referência em Triatomíneos e Epidemiologia da Doença de Chagas espera que a presente publicação complemente outros materiais já disponíveis, na expectativa de fortalecimento do SUS e consolidação do controle da doença de Chagas no Brasil.
