Abstract
The objectives of the present study were to determine the anthropometric characteristics and the nutritional status of the military males in active duty in the Brazilian Army (BA), to verify the influence of cardio-respiratory (CRF) and neuromuscular (NMF) fitness in the relationship between body mass index and waist circumference. The participation of the 55,125 men (42.1% of the total BA men in 2001) was voluntary. The age range of the subjects was large (18-61 years) but most individuals were young (mean ± SD; 25.8 ± 6.7 years of age). Anthropometric (body mass, stature, waist circumference and hip circumference), CRF (V&O2max predicted by a 12-min run test) and NMF (accessed by sit-up and push-up tests) were obtained. Mean body mass index (BMI) was 24.3 ± 3.2 kg.m-2. Overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg.m-2) was detected in 35.3% of the subjects and less than 1% was underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg.m-2). Only 11.8% of the males had the waist-hip ratio (WHR) above 0.95. CRF varied from 22.2 to 82.5 mL.O2.kg-1.min-1. Waist circumference mean values were significantly lower in the highest fit subjects in comparison to the lowest fit (p < 0.001) even after adjusting for age and BMI. The findings of the present study indicate an association between abdominal fatness and fitness (CRF and NMF) which may help explain, in part, how physical fitness modulates the health risk attributed to obesity and associated to high body mass index.
