Water is one of the most important natural resource on the planet. It is essential to support life and to the socioeconomic development of human societies. Thus, d it should presents adequate quality and quantity, meeting the national standards established by Ordinance GM/MS No. 888, of 4 May 2021, from the Brazil’s Ministry of Health. However, the failure of dams originating from mining activities can contaminate the quality of water distributed to populations, contributing to the dissemination of cases of waterborne diseases. This research aimed to study the impacts on the health of the population resulting from the collapse of the Fundão dam in Mariana (MG), on the quality of water distributed in the municipalities of Governador Valadares/MG and Colatina/ES in the period 2008-2018. The association between water quality and health variables was sought using the Sperman correlation test. The results showed that before and after the Mariana dam collapse, the quality of water distributed to the populations changed and may be associated with increased incidence rates of yellow fever, mycosis and skin diseases, Acute diarrhoeal disease (ADD), hospitalization of children ≤ 5 years and seniors ≥ 65 years of age. It was observed that the local sanitation policy strongly influences the population’s health, and that it should be build in association with the public health sector. Effective measures in the design, licensing, construction, maintenance and safety of dams are necessary to protect the population and the environment. Therefore, studies must be carried out in order to mitigate possible impacts of dams collapses.
