Abstract
This study's main objective is to investigate young adults' museum experiences in the "Gondwana: The Earth in Movement" exhibition, currently being held at the Geodiversity Museum which belongs to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. We use as theoretical framework mainly Falk and Dierking's museum experience concepts and Schorch's self narrative approach, among other authors. We utilize a case study's scope. We collect data using semi-structured interviews with spontaneous visitors, to the said exhibition, aged between 18 to 24. The data suggests the majority of the visitors had a pleasant and satisfying experience. The museum physical environment provided these visitors with a place to relax, learn and socialize (strengthening and maintaining social bonds); but also allowed for a gain of interest in science; contributed to lifelong learning and to an increase in the appreciation of the geosciences and of the public university, etc. Concerning learning gains, 18 amongst the 20 interviewed, affirmed to have that kind of gain. Notwithstanding the main finding of this work is what we call the university factor. It is a characteristic present in the Geodiversity Museum (since it is an university museum) but also in the interviewees (all of them having direct or indirect connections to the university milieu). That was a leading characteristic amongst the interviewees when it comes to their visit motivations, gains and meaning-making processes.
