Abstract
Introduction: The treatment of patients with cancer aims to increase the chance of cure and surviving,
and to improve the quality of life of those patients. Nevertheless, this treatment usually presents
important adverse side effects. As a consequence of this fact, an increasing interest in the
investigation of the quality of life of patients submitted to this treatment has been observed followed
by the development of tests aiming to measure the association between health and quality of life.
Objectives: 1) Evaluate the health global status; the degree of physical, emotional, cognitive and
social operation, of women submitted to mastectomy for breast cancer treatment in Belém/ Pará/
Brazil, and relate this operation to the age and the time elapsed from the surgery; 2) Evaluate the
presence and the severity degree of symptoms and relate them to the women age and the time
elapsed from the surgery. Sample: 92 patients between 28 and 86 years old submitted to mastectomy
at least 6 months, assisted at Ofir Loyola Hospital in Belém/ Pará. Procedure: The interviews were
accomplished using two questionnaires of the European Organization of Research and Treatment for
Cancer (EORTC/ QLQ-C-30 and BR-23). The analysis of the data was carried out through Epi-Info
program (6.04b version). Through the bivariate analysis was investigated the association among
physical performance degree, emotional status, cognitive and social operation, physical symptoms,
concern about the body and sexual activity, related to patient age and time elapsed between the
surgery and the interview. Results: Restrictions of physical activities showed association only to the
patient age. It was observed the occurrence of irritability, tension, concern and depression in 1/3 of
the patients, this prevalence decreased, except for depression, with the passing of surgery time; 14%
of the interviewees referred interference in the family and social life; 50% reported important
difficulties of financial order; 89% did not refer sexual interest at the moment of interview; 59,8% of
the patients considered their general health “great”, that is in a scale of 1(bad) and 7(great), they gave
notes between 6 and 7. About global quality of life, 55% of the patients gave notes between 6 and 7.
In both cases there was no difference with the time of surgery. Patients older than 60 years, referred
better leves of general health and global quality of life.
