Apoptose significa morte celular programada. É desencadeada por genes que estão presentes dentro do próprio núcleo da célula, expressando e ativando a DNAse, provocando a desintegração nuclear, numa espécie de suicídio celular. A célula morta desta maneira se mumifica, se desintegra ou é fagocitada silenciosamente, sem gerar mediadores da inflamação, o que acontece, por exemplo, quando há necrose. O fenômeno da apoptose aparece em várias ocasiões, tanto fisiológicas como patológicas, como substituição de células velhas, na modulação das reações imunológicas, na destruição de células neoplásicas, etc. Tanto a ocorrência exagerada do fenômeno, como a sua falha, podem acarretar conseqüências graves para o organismo.
