This dissertation aims to study the environmental exposure to mercury using bi-omarkers, (mercury in blood and mercury in hair), in conscripts from the Brazilian Army. The choice of mercury was due to the fact that it is not part of any biological process and has high toxicity, suggesting that its origin should be investigated, when present in the human organism. The participants were chosen because these young people are in an intermediate age group that is difficult to access by traditional surveys and because they are obliged at that age to attend selection commissions for military service. Mercury is a metal that is avail-able in many ways in nature, depending on its oxidation state. Emissions of mercury into the atmosphere can occur either from natural sources or from man. In the environment, it can be transformed into more toxic chemical forms, such as methylmercury, causing its accumula-tion in aquatic organisms and reaching humans through the food chain. Exposure to mercury induces the appearance of harmful effects to various systems of the human organism and these effects can manifest both in the short and long term, because even when it is not being released, due to its various uses, its presence poses danger both the environment and man. The data for this project were collected from the subproject of the conscripts of the Brazilian Army residing in the city of Rio de Janeiro, which were evaluated in the Pilot Project of the I National Survey of Populations Exposed to Chemical Substances, carried out in late 2007. The assessment of baseline exposure population groups can generate reference values through the use of biomarkers, which are matrices used to assess human exposure to mercury. In the present study, some variables were tested and the results showed that the majority of individu-als who presented an increased concentration of mercury, reported the consumption of marine organisms. For the age group studied, was proposed a reference value of 3.8 µg / L in blood and 0.4 µg / g in the hair, using P95. Thus, the reference values can assist public health agencies in the investigation and monitoring of individuals who have high mercury concentrations in relation to these values and also, prevent or minimize health and environmental damage resulting from environmental exposure to this chemical element.
