The aim of the study was to map the coverage of marijuana in the major Brazilian press in 2019, seeking the most frequent approaches. It started from the perception that this coverage presented more non-police approaches, privileging approaches on public policies and therapeutic potential of medicinal cannabis. A survey was carried out on the websites of the newspapers O Globo and Folha de São Paulo, about material published between April and August 2019. 204 texts were found with the keyword “marijuana”. Of this total, 148 had a non-police approach, compared to 56 with a strictly police approach. Among the 148 texts with a non-police approach, the most frequent frameworks were public policies (84 texts), controversies (57), science (42) and business potential (27). The survey data indicates that there was a plurality of voices involved in the marijuana debate, involving members of society, the scientific community and the government. The results indicate that the coverage of marijuana brought a diversity of themes, with more qualified information than just the police news, thus helping in the complexification of the public debate on the theme and fulfilling a relevant role in science communication and in the promotion of Public Health and Science.
