Abstract in Portuguese
A técnica aqui avaliada,
de Janeiro. Os resultados mostraram remoções satisfatórias para DQO (29 - 87 %);
(17 – 33 %) e NH3 (0 – 73 %).
Abstract
The present standards of sanitation and water supply in Brazil, chiefly regarding
wastewater disposal, have created poor health conditions for most of the population. To
solve this problem, it is necessary to build treatment systems suitable to the Brazilian
reality, that is, cheap and easy to maintain. This work evaluates constructed wetland
technology, which meets these requirements and showed satisfactory results during a
monitored time period. Methodology was based on analysis of efficiency of the
technology, using physiochemical and microbiological water quality parameters from a
sub-surface flow constructed wetland system, treating septic wastewater of a small
village in Ilha Grande in the southwest region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The results
of this study showed satisfactory removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) between
29 and 87 %; biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), between 44 and 88 %; turbidity,
between 73 and 95 %; and helminths eggs, no eggs were found in the effluent. Results
were unsatisfactory for total phosphorus (TP), with removal between -7 and 31 %, and
microorganism indicators like total coliformes (between 72 and 99,8 %) and
Escherichia coli (between 69 and 99,98 %). The oxygen supply for the treatment was
either insufficient or poorly distributed, causing low removal by nitrification for total
Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) between 17 and 33 %, and ammonia (NH3), between 0 and 73
%. However, great loss of water by evaporation decreased the effluent flow enough to
allow safe discharge to the receiving body of water. In accordance with these results,
constructed wetland systems are good choices for the treatment of domestic wastewater,
but require a final disinfection process to assure discharge conditions that do not
introduce risks of fecal contamination.
