Apresentação/Introdução: A questão sobre as contaminações, ocasionadas pelo mercúrio em escala mundial, produziu iniciativas políticas em diversos níveis (global, regional e nacional). Para buscar uma solução aos impactos à saúde e ao meio ambiente, a comunidade internacional assinou a Convenção de Minamata sobre o Mercúrio, visando proteger a saúde humana e o meio ambiente das emissões antropogênicas de mercúrio. Objetivos: Analisar os impactos da Convenção de Minamata sobre os serviços de saúde pública no Brasil. Metodologia: Para esse trabalho foram utilizados os seguintes procedimentos metodológicos: levantamento e análise documental das sessões de negociação da CMM, disponíveis em; revisão bibliográfica e a observação participativa, nas diferentes etapas do processo de negociação, durante o período compreendido entre 2007 à 2013; inicialmente, como negociador junto ao PNUMA, pelo Governo Brasileiro; e, a posteriori, como negociador da sociedade civil do Grupo de Trabalho Mercúrio Zero (ZMWG). Utilizou-se, ainda, a análise de dados e de informações coletadas no quadro da observação participativa, para a interpretação de decisões que foram tomadas. Resultados: Os países latino-americanos, liderados pelo Brasil, tinham posições firmes sobre a necessidade de se estabelecerem disposições sobre a saúde humana, no âmbito da convenção multilateral ambiental. A Convenção ainda dispõe sobre a substituição de produtos adicionados de mercúrio e utilizados nos serviços de saúde (termômetros e esfigmomanômetros) até 2020. Em relação às amálgamas dentárias, as disposições incluíram medidas para a redução de seu uso. Sobre o conservante de vacina timerosal/ tiomersal, este foi retirado das disposições da Convenção, sendo ainda permitido seu uso. Conclusões/Considerações: Para solucionar os problemas decorrentes da exposição humana à poluição do mercúrio na atmosfera, demandam-se estratégias que englobem respostas coordenadas, nos níveis local,nacional, regional e internacional, por meio de políticas públicas eficazes e efetivas. Com a adoção dessa nova convenção ambiental internacional, destaca-se a importância que os países estão dando para o enfrentamento de problemas globais, particularmente o do mercúrio.
