During the last two decades there has been increasing concern within the scientific community over the effects of indoor air quality on health.
Actually, there is a wide variety of chemical substances, biological agents and biologically derives materials in the indoor environment, and these are associated with a range of illnesses.
In recent years, employees in a big airport terminal at the city of Rio de Janeiro have expressed their concerns about air quality and work environment discomforts. Because of the difficulties usually encountered determining the exact causes of such concerns about the
building environment. A questionnaire was undertaken to assess the nature and spatial distribution of employee health and comfort concerns and to attempt to identify associations between employee responses and workplace conditions. The most commonly reported workrelates symptoms among employees were: dry eyes, sore eyes, stuffy nose, headache, etc. The
respondents reported that they were unsatisfied with the environmental conditions (air movement, humidity and temperature) inside the building.
The place studied is a differentiated ambient because of its complexity, it has all the characteristics of a public place with an enormous variety of activities and types of occupation.
The selected air quality parameters that were investigated indoor and outdoor of a passenger terminal the studied parameters were: Total Particulate Matter (TPM), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's), Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC's) and airborne
viable fungi. The results showed that the concentration of TPM and VOC's were below the threshold limit values. The detected fungi were mainly non-pathogenic, some genus had high counting but below the Brazilian Reference Standard, it can bring risks to the health. The
levels found for the indoor air contaminants demonstrated that hygienization and exchange of the Air Conditioning System were not efficient enough to keep the levels down.
