this study talks about the perception of Brazilian scientists toward science coverage by the mass media and about their relationship with journalists. Of qualitative character, it is part of a national study in which a survey was conducted. From the survey, we identified some aspects that were deepened through semi-structured interviews conducted with 20 scientists from different research areas and regions of Brazil. Most participants have a positive relationship with journalists but prefer to limit the interviews to topics of their specialty, as they don’t feel comfortable enough to talk about broader country’s issues, such as politics or economics. the interviewed scientists highlight the need of using ethics to talk about disagreements among researchers and to review results of studies carried out by their peers. Furthermore, they avoid talking about research not yet published in scientific journals, either because these have not gone through the peer review process or to preserve the intellectual property of their results. Respondents feel comfortable talking with the media without asking permission to their bosses or press officers, but prefer to not contact themselves the media, when they want to spread the voice on their results.
