Mikania, guaco has been popularly used for many years because its medicinal properties, attributed to leaves, including tonic, depurative, antipyretic and bronchodilatory actions, as well as appetite stimulant and anti-influenza. It is also used in the treatment of respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis, in the form of cough syrups. Several of these health benefits have been scientifically proven. Studies have been published about the action of guaco causing bronchodilation and relaxation of the respiratory smooth muscle, which may be related to calcium channel blockade, accompanied by anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic actions, which are beneficial to the treatment of asthma, a problem characterized by obstruction and inflammation of the airways. According to ANVISA indications it is recommended to use as tincture and extract forms. Coumarin is the marker of choice in the quality control of the raw material and phytotherapeutic products containing this plant. In this work, a review is presented on plants of the genus Mikania, including pharmacobotanical, chemical composition, biological and pharmacological activities, drug interactions, toxicity and quality control.
