A expansão da pandemia de COVID-19 pelas favelas, periferias e interiores do Brasil expõe de forma cruel a desigualdade social e econômica entre as classes sociais. Essa desigualdade, muitas vezes aceita e naturalizada pela sociedade e pelas instituições do Estado, representa uma barreira significativa para a implementação das recomendações básicas de higiene, distanciamento físico e permanência em casa. O Conselho Nacional de Saúde destaca a necessidade de proteção especial para grupos em situação de vulnerabilidade ou risco, como pessoas em situação de rua, com sofrimento mental, deficiência, HIV/aids, LGBTI+, população indígena, negra, ribeirinha e trabalhadores informais. A violência crônica nas periferias também é uma epidemia adicional no país. Em 2019, houve aumento significativo nas ameaças de morte e assassinatos de trabalhadores do campo, indígenas, quilombolas, acompanhados pelo aumento do desmatamento. Nas áreas indígenas, a invasão por garimpeiros, madeireiros e missionários representa uma ameaça adicional, exacerbando ainda mais a vulnerabilidade dessas populações à pandemia. Além disso, as condições precárias de saneamento e moradia aumentam ainda mais a vulnerabilidade das comunidades frente à pandemia. Famílias em bairros de periferia e favelas muitas vezes vivem em condições de aglomeração, compartilhando espaços reduzidos e sem ventilação adequada. O desemprego e a renda instável tornam essas comunidades ainda mais vulneráveis, com muitas famílias enfrentando a fome durante a quarentena. Diante dessa realidade, surgem iniciativas e movimentos de base nas comunidades para enfrentar a pandemia e suas consequências. Comunicadores e ativistas das favelas e periferias estão pressionando as autoridades, divulgando informações e organizando doações de alimentos e materiais de higiene. A coalizão nacional de enfrentamento ao coronavírus reúne comunicadores populares em uma frente unida para combater as fake news e exigir ações do poder público para proteger as comunidades mais vulneráveis. Em meio a esse cenário desafiador, é fundamental que todos estejam unidos no enfrentamento à COVID-19 e na luta contra a desigualdade social. A Radis destaca a importância de se informar por fontes confiáveis e tomar as medidas necessárias para proteger a si mesmo e aos outros.
