A raposa Cerdocyon thous (Linnaeus) foi encontrada naturalmente infectada por Leishmania chagasi Cunha e Chagas, 1936, em área endêmicas de leishmaniose visceral aonde o flebótomo Lutzomyia longiplalpis (Luz & Neiva, 1912) é o vetor incriminado.
