importantes deste sistema. Possui função principalmente na homeostasia e na regulação
do consumo de energia por todo o organismo e em todas as fases de desenvolvimento. A
Many substances present in the environment and in the work environment may interfere
with the endocrine system of humans and other animals. These products, which are often
bioaccumulated and highly toxic, to deregulate the endocrine system are called Endocrine
Disrupters. The thyroid gland is one of the most important of this system. It has a function
mainly in homeostasis and regulation of energy consumption throughout the organism
and in all stages of development. The thyroid hormone alteration related to endocrine
disrupters is one of the most reported in the literature, and may tend to hypothyroidism
or hyperthyroidism, and its hormonal physiological axis can be affected by the most
varied mechanisms of interference. The agrochemicals represent the main chemical group
of endocrine disrupters, due to the: indiscriminate use and for decades, structural
characteristics similar to hormones, environmental persistence, bioaccumulation in the
adipose tissue, transgenerational effect etc., presenting irreversible impacts and even after
years of exposure. This work will, through a narrative bibliographical review over a
period of 20 years, discuss which pesticides can deregulate thyroid hormones in humans,
their potential toxic effects and which mechanisms of action are proposed. We evaluated
73 scientific publications specific to the topic and other studies through references not
obtained in the preliminary search. The dissertation was categorized for the three main
exposure groups (pregnant and newborn, population and occupational). The results were
very heterogeneous between the thyroid hormonal findings and the chemical groups
studied, mainly due to the methodology of hormonal analysis and of the pesticide and the
characteristics of the sample evaluated. However, a hormonal pattern suggestive of
hypothyroidism was mainly found in studies involving organochlorine pesticides, which
were the most studied in the three exposure groups, which is consistent with the
mechanisms of action proposed in the literature for this chemical group. The
anticholinesterase pesticides (organophosphates and carbamates) were expressively
studied mainly in the population and occupational groups. They presented both hormonal
changes consistent with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, with a higher tendency for
the latter in the occupational group, which was also related to the mechanism of action
most proposed in the literature for this category. Other pesticides, such as fungicides and
herbicides, studied in less number and sometimes as only publication, presented several
results for the thyroid hormonal changes and with mechanisms of action still very little
elucidative. The issue addressed is current and of great importance due to the impacts on
public health. However, there is still much to know about the thyroid endocrine
dysregulation in humans caused by pesticides.
