Abstract in Portuguese
O Brasil é um país de dimensões continentais com amplas desigualdades regionais e sociais. Neste trabalho, examinamos o desenvolvimento histórico e os componentes do sistema de saúde brasileiro, com foco no processo de reforma dos últimos quarenta anos, incluindo a criação do Sistema Único de Saúde. Uma característica fundamental da reforma sanitária brasileira é o fato de ela ter sido conduzida pela sociedade civil, e não por governos, partidos políticos ou organizações internacionais. O Sistema Único de Saúde aumentou o acesso ao cuidado com a saúde para uma parcela considerável da população brasileira em uma época em que o sistema vinha sendo progressivamente privatizado. Ainda há muito a fazer para que o sistema de saúde brasileiro se torne universal. Nos últimos vinte anos houve muitos avanços, como investimento em recursos humanos, em ciência e tecnologia e na atenção básica, além de um grande processo de descentralização, ampla participação social e maior conscientização sobre o direito à saúde.
Para que o sistema de saúde brasileiro supere os desa?os atuais é necessária uma maior mobilização política para reestruturar o ?nanciamento e rede?nir os papéis dos setores público e privado.
