Introduction: Among the remarkable features of Brazilian society from the mid-twentieth century on, the continuous increase in life expectancy contributes to changes in the social way of life where people over 60 years old show that reaching old age is not the only goal to achieve. They say we need to understand this stage of life upon the complexity that surrounds us and transforms the aging processes and relationships. The perception that social coexistence decreases and qualitatively affects the life of the elderly led us to the studies of this research. Objective: To study the characteristics of coexistence in old age. Methods: The research was developed considering four “points of observation” of the ways that coexistence acquires in old age, manifested as a benefit or harm to the elderly and related to prevention of social isolation and health promotion. Each “observation point” had its own investigative process and different descriptions of coexistence, offering different contributions but a common center line: expression space for the elderly. Results: The first point, the article “Social mobilization and principles of Active Aging as strategies for reducing the vulnerability of older people”, showed that the engagement of the elderly in research provides fleeting welfare that dissipates when the opportunity for them to express themselves ends. In the second point, the study of the “Virtual Community of the Elderly: Observations on Aging in a Public Group on Facebook” - a manuscript in preparation - indicated the great interest of the elderly in networking, which generated an exponential growth in the number of participants and a manifested satisfaction of many members, together with the rejection of conflict situations. The third point, “Experience Report: Participant Observation in University Extension Initiatives with the Elderly” provided an analysis of the participation of the elderly in university extension initiatives, showing they feel those as spaces for coexistence, learning, and fun. In the fourth point of observation, the “Workshop Report: Me, a Youngster, I Don't Worry About Aging,” was an exercise of empathy between the young individuals and the elderly, that possibly affects coexistence and intergenerational relationships, as a preparation for the youngster's future old age. Final considerations: This research shows that regular and continuous contact between older people brings back collective life as a natural part of their lives, restores community sense and affects participants in different ways for preventing the isolation of the elderly and promoting their health. We found that (1) the engagement of the elderly in academic research excludes the possibility of uninterrupted joining together; (2) community-based interactions generate bonding and coping with conflicts inherent in created relationships; (3) the opening of the university to the elderly contributes to their citizenship; and (4) the coexistence between generations can be realized from the perception of young people about what characterizes old age.
