Contaminações ambientais e a exposição ocupacional à gasolina preocupam as autoridades de Saúde e Ambiente e atingem um grande número de trabalhadores e residentes próximos aos postos de revenda de combustíveis (PRC). A gasolina é uma mistura de várias substâncias voláteis, dentre elas, hidrocarbonetos como benzeno, tolueno, etilbenzeno e xilenos (BTEX). Este trabalho objetivou realizar avaliação ambiental pela determinação das concentrações de BTEX no ar do ambiente de trabalho de PRCs localizados na Zona Oeste do município do Rio de Janeiro. Amostragens passiva e ativas foram realizadas tendo como base a metodologia NIOSH 1501 (2003). Os amostradores passivos foram dispostos junto à lapela do uniforme dos trabalhadores e os amostradores ativos foram posicionados próximos às bombas, a uma altura média da zona de respiração de cerca de 1,50 m do solo e também fixos na lapela dos trabalhadores. Participaram do estudo 51 trabalhadores expostos ocupacionalmente ao BTEX. As amostragens passivas apresentaram resultados inferiores aos limites de quantificação. Os resultados das amostragens ativas obtidos com amostradores fixos nos trabalhadores foram: benzeno (6,1–513 µg.m-3), tolueno (14,2–316 µg.m-3), etilbenzeno (38,5–71,3 µg.m-3) e xilenos (12,6–4739 µg.m-3); já a amostragem ativa com amostradores posicionados nas bombas de combustíveis tiveram os seguintes resultados: benzeno (7,5–311 µg.m-3), tolueno (7,5–80,5 µg.m-3), etilbenzeno (6,8–19,7 µg.m-3) e xilenos (5,5–18,5 µg.m-3). A exposição ao BTEX identificada nos PRCs, mesmo sendo a baixas concentrações, resulta em um risco de câncer para benzeno acima dos limites estabelecidos pelas agencias International Agency for Research Cancer (IARC/WHO) e United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA/USA).
