A saúde bucal, parte importante e indissociável da saúde geral, vem sendo pouco abordada e priorizada nas políticas de atenção à saúde das gestantes no Brasil. Estudos científicos apontam que a atenção odontológica durante a gestação é indicada e pertinente, seja porque muitas mulheres apresentam perturbações orais decorrentes das alterações hormonais nesse período, seja porque há evidências da associação entre a doença periodontal e a prematuridade e o baixo peso ao nascer. Além disso, demonstram que, com certas precauções, o tratamento é seguro. Entretanto, crenças, mitos, receios e resistência dificultaram por muito tempo esse cuidado, e, ainda hoje, confundem pacientes e profissionais. Realizamos um estudo de natureza qualitativa em unidades de saúde da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, com o objetivo de investigar os conhecimentos, as práticas e as representações de médicos do pré-natal, dentistas e gestantes sobre a atenção à saúde bucal durante a gravidez, visando compreender como estes podem influenciar na oferta, na procura e na adesão a esse cuidado. Concluímos que, apesar da heterogeneidade encontrada no universo estudado, práticas, conhecimentos e representações dos três grupos de sujeitos da pesquisa contribuem para uma cultura que não valoriza nem estimula a atenção odontológica durante a gravidez. Cuidados com a saúde bucal ainda não fazem parte da rotina da atenção pré-natal e da noção de direitos da gestante. A atenção odontológica nesse período é limitada, tanto pela oferta restrita (poucos serviços especializados), como pelo pouco estímulo ao tratamento, por parte dos médicos, dos dentistas e das redes sociais das gestantes, o que determina uma baixa procura e adesão ao tratamento.(AU)
