Trata-se de um estudo exploratório e descritivo de natureza qualitativa que tem como objetivo contribuir para a redução das suspensões cirúrgicas em um hospital da Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre/RS. A literatura investigada apontou para múltiplas causas possíveis para a ocorrência de suspensões cirúrgicas. Embora o hospital em estudo apresente taxas inferiores ao que a literatura aponta, o projeto se justifica, pois há um volume grande de cirurgias realizadas no mesmo, e suspensões acarretam em custos maiores para a instituição, aumento de riscos de infecção hospitalar e desgastes emocionais para pacientes, familiares e profissionais de saúde. O projeto propõe identificar e descrever os motivos pelos quais são suspensas cirurgias programadas no Centro Cirúrgico adulto no hospital em estudo, identificar as especialidades cirúrgicas que tiveram procedimentos suspensos, as limitações da equipe de enfermagem no que se refere às informações fornecidas aos pacientes e acompanhantes sobre o preparo pré-operatório e elaborar proposta de melhorias no processo pré-operatório de gestão e comunicação, a partir dos dados obtidos.
