O ambiente que nos cerca está repleto de microrganismos, que são encontrados em toda a superfície terrestre, em locais de convívio natural do homem (água, ar, solo), e em todos os seres vivos, incluindo o próprio ser humano e suas fontes alimentares. A água e os alimentos contaminados representam importantes fatores de risco para diversas doenças, podendo gerar desidratação, desnutrição, internações hospitalares devido às complicações, e até mesmo levar o indivíduo ao óbito. Como opção mais segura, não apenas as residências, mas locais públicos como empresas, estabelecimentos comerciais, clubes, igrejas e escolas, tem substituído os bebedouros com saída de água direta por modelos com garrafões de água mineral. No entanto, é muito comum que profissionais que manipulam estes equipamentos nas suas práticas diárias, potencializem a veiculação de microrganismos causadores de doenças. Neste sentido, propomos o estudo da presença de espécies bacterianas de relevância em saúde pública e amplamente veiculadas por alimentos e pela água, como Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella sp, Shigella sp e Pseudomonas aeruginosa, na superfície de bebedouros do Colégio Estadual Jardim Alvorada, no município de Nova Iguaçu, na Baixada Fluminense O objetivo deste estudo foi rastrear epidemiologicamente estas espécies e coletar informações, que fizeram parte de um cartaz contendo o adequado procedimento de lavagem das mãos e de um folheto com medidas de higienização dos bebedouros, visando a minimização destas contaminações. Neste trabalho, foram estudadas tanto a trajetória microbiológica da água consumida por alunos e professores e utilizada no preparo de refeições dos alunos, quanto os conhecimentos e práticas de educação para saúde das pessoas que manipulam a substituição de garrafões de água mineral e que são responsáveis pela limpeza e manutenção dos bebedouros. Simultaneamente, houve o esclarecimento dos demais profissionais da escola e dos alunos sobre os riscos de contaminação da água e transmissão de doenças, visando a elaboração de atitudes simples a serem tomadas no dia-a-dia na tentativa de evitá-las.
