With the purpose of identifying the role the placenta as a potencial source of valid data to the final diagnoses of autopsies, 171 fetal and neonatal deaths (41 fetal abortions, 76 stillbirths and 48 neonatal deaths) were analyzed.
Gross and microscopic data obtained by the placental examination were responsible for the diagnoses in 76,6% of the abotions; diagnostic and contributory elements were obtained in 24,9% as well as contributory data in 8,5%.
In the neonatal deaths and in 74 of 76 stillbirths (97,5%), abnormal placentary findings were identified and included in the final diagnoses of autopsy.
