Based on a socio-anthropological framework, the present study analyzes the representationsand social practices of health professionals and users about childbirth care in a UniversityHospital in Southern Brazil. It is a qualitative research that used ethnographic observation andsemi-structured interviews to understand the dimension of the subjectivity of the studieduniverse. Participants in the study were 10 health professionals (four physicians, five nursesand one nursing technician) who work in obstetric care services and 15 women. The HUObstetric Center and the women's homes were the study scenarios. It was observed that thedeliveries considered physiological are little taught in the HU and that the health professionalsact as a priority within the model of biomedical and technocratic attention. Women highlightdifferent forms of violence suffered such as negligence, the non-appreciation of theircomplaints and the cold and impersonal treatment by the professionals. It has been observedthroughout the work that interventions such as kristeller maneuver, supine position, episiotomy and oxytocin are used subsequently in obstetrical practices, regardless of thewishes of women. Some practitioners acknowledge that recurrent administration of oxytocinand episiotomy are forms of obstetric violence. However, they indicate that this form ofviolence against women needs to be more debated in the academic world. It is concluded thatit is essential that changes in the academic training of HU health professionals take place, inorder to value the good practices of attention to childbirth and birth advocated by theHumanization Policy at Childbirth and Birth, valuing the multiprofessional team effectivelyand the leading role of women. The force of social movements has been clamoring for justicefor perinatal deaths in the HU, placing women in a permanent surveillance state against obstetric violence.
