As crianças aprendem a falar durante os dois primeiros anos de vida. O bebê começa usando a língua, os lábios, o céu da boca e qualquer dente que esteja aparecendo para produzir sons ("os" e "as" no primeiro ou no segundo mês; os murmúrios começam pouco depois).
Logo, esses sons se tornam palavras de verdade (um "mamã" ou um "papá" pode escapar sem querer entre os 4 e os 5 meses, levando lágrimas aos olhos dos pais).
