Mental health in Brazil has undergone several transformations over the past
decades. Aligned to the ideals of Psychiatric Reform called the phasing out of
hospital-centered model of democratic and human models, led to a reconfiguration in
mental health care. Through various policies, legislation and implementation in
contributions from groups defending the rights of mental patients was possible the
structuring and expansion of a network outside the hospital which is part of the CAPS
(Center for Psychosocial Support) for his strategic location, this has become decisive
in the consolidation of a new model of treatment and care of the mentally disturbed
person, now increasingly integrated with Primary Care through the Family Health
Program (PSF). Considering the analysis of theoretical concluded that the CAPS has
been a strategic element for the humanization of mental health care and that its
development and expansion has given rise to a new model of mental health in Brazil,
becoming closer to those in need. The role of CAPS is to promote, from the provision
of mental health services and social support, development of autonomy and
citizenship of the users, restoring them to social life and family life.
