No Brasil, a Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana (LTA) destaca-se por sua ampla distribuição, ocorrendo em todos os Estados da Federação. Em 2015, foram notificados 19.395 casos da doença sendo o Amazonas responsável por 1.713 casos, todos na forma cutânea. No Brasil o Ministério da Saúde recomenda, como droga de primeira escolha a ser usada no Sistema único de Saúde (SUS), o antimonial pentavalente e o isotionato de pentamidina ou a anfotericina B como segunda opção e Pentoxifilina como imunomodulador.
