The females of Aedes aegypti are able to colonize the most varied places that can accumulate water in the environment. The permanence of mosquito-infested areas in Brazil points to the low effectiveness of control strategies aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding sites. Chemical insecticides such as the insect juvenile hormone analog, pyriproxyfen (Pyr), are used in the treatment of drinking water reservoirs, one of the main types of breeding grounds in Brazil. The use of the compound associated with trap has revealed that it can be taken mechanically to other breeding sites by the mosquitoes themselves. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the primary and secondary effects of Pyr on the reproductive potential of Ae. aegypti, with emphasis applied to the development of toxic baits. The direct exposure of eggs to overdoses and of larvae to sub-doses of Pyr revealed the absence of ovicidal effect and biological cost associated with the survival of individuals. As for the intake of Pyr, male and female mosquitoes fed 50 mg / L of the compound in blood, honey (50%) or sucrose (20%) solution, there was a significant reduction in fecundity and fertility of individuals, especially when fed with honey or blood treated. Tests in simulated field conditions revealed that females were able to carry the Pyr from the disseminator units (UD) to cryptic breeding sites or not, in amounts sufficient to eliminate more than 90% of the exposed individuals. By combining toxic baits of carbohydrates and UD treated with Pyr, the results found revealed a potentiating effect of this latter tool. Our study, in general, reveals that the joint use of the two techniques can be an integrated and innovative strategy in the control of Aedes aegypti.
