Abstract
The teaching profession is considered by the International Labor Organization as one of the most stressful. The high prevalence of vocal alterations among teachers was confirmed recently by an epidemiological survey carried out in Brazil. This problem has been presented as the main cause of teacher withdrawal. In view of this context, there is a need for the implementation of vocal health protection actions and the discussion about the diagnostic methods used in these actions. OBJECTIVE: To suggest the most appropriate diagnostic methods for screening for vocal changes and actions to promote and protect teachers' vocal health. METHODOLOGY: The presence of the association between the diagnostic methods was investigated, using secondary data from a survey carried out with 95 teachers from the municipal education network of the city of Salvador, Bahia, using the chi-square test. In addition, an analysis was carried out on the use of self-reference in actions directed at teachers' vocal health, based on the theoretical reference of worker's health and health promotion. RESULTS: There was a significant association (p=0.000) between voice self-referral and perceptual-auditory voice evaluation. There was no association between the perceptual-auditory evaluation of voice and videolaryngostroboscopy, nor between self-reference of vocal alteration and videolaryngostroboscopy. DISCUSSION: The absence of the association found can be attributed to differences in the possibilities and specificities of each method. CONCLUSION: The data found reaffirm the importance of the existence of gold standard methods distinct from vocal alteration and vocal fold alteration. The potential of self-reference of vocal alteration in the early identification of these changes and their contribution to the integration of popular knowledge with scientific knowledge is highlighted.
