O artigo discute as práticas de profilaxia contra a varíola no estado de São Paulo, tendo como objeto privilegiado de análise o Instituto Vacinogênico, instituição criada em 1892, no âmbito de uma reforma sanitária que modernizou a saúde pública no estado de São Paulo. Implantado e dirigido até o ano de 1913 pelo reputado cirurgião paulista Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, o instituto foi responsável pela disseminação da vacina antivariólica de origem animal no estado, funcionando de forma autônoma até 1918, quando foi anexado ao Instituto Bacteriológico.

This discussion of smallpox prevention practices in the state of São Paulo focuses primarily on the Instituto Vacinogênico, created in 1892 as part of a sanitation reform that modernized public health in São Paulo state. Established and headed until 1913 by the renowned São Paulo surgeon Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, the institute was responsible for statewide distribution of the smallpox vaccine derived from animals. It operated on its own until 1918, when it was made part of the Instituto Bacteriológico.
