A pediculose, popularmente conhecida como infestações de piolhos, é uma doença parasitária, contagiosa que pode surgir na cabeça, corpo, cílios, sobrancelhas ou na região dos pêlos pubianos.
Como ectoparasitas, os piolhos vivem no exterior do hospedeiro, utilizando do sangue humano como sua fonte de nutrição, o que pode causar sensação de coceira e formigamento na região afetada. O piolho é pequeno e sem asas, pode ser visto a olho nu e a sua infestação ocorre do contato direto com o cabelo de uma pessoa infectada ou através de objetos compartilhados. Nos últimos trinta anos observou-se um aumento significativo na incidência de casos devido a multiplicação rápida do parasita, que, ao longo de sua curta vida de trinta a
quarenta dias, é capaz de depositar mais de duzentos ovos. Crianças em idade escolar são as mais atingidas pelo tipo capilar, com maior incidência em meninas, mas podem abranger qualquer sexo e
