Abstract: Arboviruses are maintained in nature due the biological transmission of an infected vertebrate host to another through hematophagous arthropods. As occur in humans, sub-clinic infection cases due to arboviruses are frequent in domestic animals, however its identification normally only occur during epizooties, and the sporadic cases are seldom diagnosed. Regions like the Brazilian Pantanal, which present high density of equine population, circulation of migratory birds, environmental and climatic conditions which favor the proliferation of arthropods, are susceptible the circulation of arboviruses. The amount of data concerning arboviruses in the Pantanal is scarce; therefore the objective of the present work was study the circulation of arboviruses in the region. During the months of February and November of 2007, a survey and capture of arthropods was carried in the Sub-region of the Nhecolândia in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul. Equine serum samples were also obtained. A total of 75 groups of Culicidae and 18 of Ixodidae, comprising 1759 specimens of arthropods were submitted to viral isolation and RT-PCR while 135 equine serum samples were submitted to viral isolation, neutralization tests (NT) and RT-PCR. The investigated arboviruses were Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), Mayaro virus (MAYV), St Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV), Rocio virus (ROCV), Ilheus virus (ILHV), Yellow fever virus (YFV), West Nile virus (WNV) and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) by NT and/or RT-PCR.
Results: No virus was isolated; viral nucleic-acid detection in the arthropods and equine sera by RT-PCR were also negative. Seropositivity in unvaccinated equines was 41,7% for WEEV and 56,6% for EEEV. No serum was positive (0%) for MAYV while 40% of them were positive to SLEV. 22 Culicidae species were identified. Our results suggest by serological evidence, the circulation in the Pantanal Region, of three arboviruses that are etiological agents of human diseases. The occurrence of these agents combined to preexistent condition, in the country, which could favor its dissemination represents a public health concern, which should be take in to account by the Public Health authorities
