O texto aborda a questão da experimentação animal na pesquisa científica, destacando sua importância na descoberta e desenvolvimento de medicamentos, vacinas e kits de diagnóstico indispensáveis para a saúde. Apesar de ser um tema ético e controverso, muitos cientistas defendem a necessidade do uso de animais em experimentos, pois ainda não existem alternativas totalmente substitutivas validadas e eficazes para todos os testes necessários. A médica veterinária Carla de Freitas Campos, diretora do Instituto de Ciência e Tecnologia em Biomodelos (ICTB/Fiocruz), explica que os animais são os modelos mais próximos dos humanos para estudos científicos em saúde, e muitas conquistas na área da saúde só foram possíveis graças à experimentação animal. No entanto, a pesquisadora ressalta a importância de se considerar a relação custo-benefício das pesquisas em saúde para toda a população, incluindo os próprios animais utilizados nos experimentos. Ela destaca que a ciência de animais de laboratório é regida pelos princípios dos 3Rs: redução, refinamento e substituição, que buscam minimizar o uso de animais, reduzir o sofrimento e encontrar métodos alternativos sempre que possível. Carla enfatiza que a tendência é de queda no uso de animais em pesquisas, devido aos avanços em métodos alternativos e ao desenvolvimento de modelos específicos para determinados tipos de estudos. No entanto, ela reconhece que ainda há muito a ser feito para alcançar uma redução significativa no uso de cobaias em experimentos científicos.
