O Brasil enfrenta uma crise de saúde pública devido a uma tríplice epidemia viral de dengue, chikungunya e zika, transmitidas pelo mosquito Aedes aegypti. A gravidade da situação se acentua com os possíveis desdobramentos da infecção por zika, incluindo complicações neurológicas e a epidemia de microcefalia congênita. As autoridades estão despertas para a urgência da situação, mas há um debate sobre as estratégias de controle, com especialistas defendendo a abordagem de modificar as condições propícias à proliferação do mosquito em vez de atacá-lo diretamente com substâncias tóxicas. O texto destaca a importância de uma abordagem holística, que inclui prevenção, tratamento, impacto no sistema de saúde e comunicação eficaz de informações. Além disso, aborda questões relacionadas à saúde mental e destaca tanto preocupações quanto avanços em outras áreas da saúde no país, como transplantes de órgãos e inovações tecnológicas.
