O texto aborda recentes casos de mortes e complicações de saúde associados à ingestão de contraste Celobar e ao uso de produtos oftalmológicos em pacientes submetidos à cirurgia de catarata. Esses eventos destacam a ambivalência do termo "farmácia", originado do grego "pharmakón", que denota uma substância capaz de causar tanto o bem quanto o mal, a vida e a morte, dependendo das condições de uso.
A mitologia grega menciona a ninfa náiade Pharmakéia, que representava uma fonte de água venenosa, e o uso de poções e filtros por magos e feiticeiros. Platão introduz o conceito de "pharmakón-que-cura", enfatizando que a cura não depende apenas da substância em si, mas também da hora certa, da dosagem certa e do conhecimento da arte e da ciência da cura. Isso complexifica a compreensão da medicina. O autor sugere que, para lidar com essa substância ambivalente, podemos aprender com Platão e a retórica. A linguagem é um "pharmakón" que pode ser veneno quando manipulado por sofistas e cura quando usado por filósofos. Jacques Derrida acrescenta que a dialética pode ser o antídoto contra o "pharmakón", e no contexto moderno, a informação desempenha esse papel.
O texto conclui que controlar o "pharmakón-remédio/veneno" requer outro "pharmakón", a informação ("logos-pharmakón"), usada na hora certa, na medida certa e por quem conhece sua arte e ciência. Isso reflete a complexidade da sociedade contemporânea, onde a informação desempenha um papel fundamental no controle e no uso adequado da "pharmakéia", representando a moderna feitiçaria impulsionada pela publicidade, propaganda e marketing, com foco no enriquecimento das indústrias e comércios da saúde.
